Groundhog Day – it’s inspiring in a way.

Rita, TV producer: I like to see a man of advancing years throwing caution to the wind. It’s inspiring in a way.
Phil, TV meteorologist: My years are not advancing as fast as you might think.

From the movie Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is celebrated in United States and Canada on February 2nd. A groundhog is rather like an overgrown squirrel. The tradition is that winter will end sooner if a groundhog comes out of its burrow and can’t see its shadow because of cloudy weather. If it’s sunny enough for the groundhog to see its shadow, winter will continue for 6 more weeks. Candlemas is an ancient celebration that comes at about the same time, with similar beliefs aside from the observation of groundhogs.

The film Groundhog Day is delightful. The lead, an egocentric weather reporter who hates the monotony of doing the same fluff reporting about the same groundhog, is stuck in a time loop where he re-lives the same day over and over again. Eventually he uses this repeating time to re-make his life.

Since the movie came out in 1993, the term “it’s groundhog day all over again” has sometimes been used to describe the same boring thing happening again and again.

See Gray? Think Green

The charm of the movie, for me, is the way a person’s hard work and good attitude can transform hating monotony to loving life. This has transformed my Groundhog Day holiday into a sort of a pulse-check time for personal goals.

One message of the movie is that though we do our own work, this change doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We react to what we put out, and so do others. In putting forth our best, especially when times are gray, we create ripples of light.

In my area, mid February is pea planting time. I love looking at the hanging pots where I plant my peas, imagining what will be there in June, but that won’t happen unless I get out there in the damp gray cold of February. Last year was the second time I put peas in those pots. Neighbors remembered, and started talking about Spring being on the way. This will be the third year, and I’m smiling just thinking of my little stack of pots.

Does gardening make you happy? Check this blog on February 3rd, the day after Groundhog day. In honor of my social networking community (and the peas I am about to plant) I’ll be announcing the first QuoteSnack meme. If you’re a gardener, indoors or out, and would like to be tagged, drop me a line on Twitter or Plurk, or leave a comment on this post.
