This is for the Lurkers

Peek-a-boo!

With today’s post open in another tab, I wandered onto a friend’s hacked site and got Rick-rolled by a never-ending series of popups. The only way out was to click on the equivalent of install-evil-file.exe, even after restarting my browser, and I wasn’t going to do that. My defaults were set to restore whatever tabs were open when I closed – not as convenient as you may think! After deleting my browser history and cookies and scanning for hitchhikers, I found that all was well, except for one thing – my fairly developed draft post was missing. Such fun. I’d forgotten to save.

All is well now, and today’s post is about half way reconstructed. I could stay up and finish it tonight, but I am choosing sleep instead.

I can tell from my server logs that some of you lurkers like to quietly check out the writing prompts, then pop in a few times a day to see if someone has posted to the prompt or if the the next post is up yet. You can go to sleep, too. ;-)

Today’s post will happen tomorrow, and, yes, it will be related to today’s writing prompt.

Rick-rolling is such a funny, if ridiculous, prank, it’s too bad it’s come to mean much more insidious forms of phishing and pharming.

I learned a term a few years back, “lerp” also “lurp.” Not seen much in print although both spelling have a variety of definitions in the Urban dictionary, I find it in fairly common usage. Adding what I know to the Urban dictionary definitions, I would say:

“to lerp” is to show up at another’s house empty handed (whether there is a social event going on or not) and enjoy the largesse of one’s (potentially unexpecting and unwilling) host. lerper (n)

“to lurp” is to take this lack of graciousness one step further, and actually snoop (or lurk) around the host’s abode when not being watched looking for small items to steal … and then stealing them. lighters are frequently lurped in the homes of smokers. lurper (n)

I like the term “glomp.” It’s a combination of “glom” and “jump,” like a bear hug with a running start. This leads me to the spectacle of a glomping lerper. Heh. Eeew!
