Writing Prompt – February 19, 2010

QuoteSnack offers fresh quotes daily, attributed and linked to a confirmed, published source. In addition, I’ll sometimes post a writing prompt with simple instructions. The next post will be a quote that has something to do with the prompt, so you can take a peek at differences or similarities in how someone else relates to using the same words.

There is no wrong approach. Don’t worry if something seems to be a lot more emotionally charged than it is on the surface, or if some prompts are duds for you. This is a mind-opening exercise; anything is possible.

The Prompt

Directions:

  1. Be ready to write, word processor open, or pad and pencil in hand. Set a timer for five minutes.
  2. Clear your mind.
  3. Click “Reveal Writing Prompt” below, and look at the prompt for the space of one deep, quiet breath.
  4. As you start the second breath, clear your mind of expectations.
  5. Write, full on, whatever comes to you, for five minutes. Do not stop to correct anything – just go.
  6. When the time is up, you have to stop.
  7. Get up and wiggle. Move. Laugh. Growl. Pat self on back.

You’re welcome to leave comments about the experience and anything that comes of it, including links or even your entire prompt-generated exercise. However, please don’t look at any comments until after finishing your own writing. What you’re doing right now is a personal thing.

If I now recognize evil in other people, is it not because I have become evil too? If I see someone has a suspicious nose, have I not smelled the same bad things? …surely it is because what I can see in another is also within myself. How blind I have been to think that those things..those crazy people out there do..their anger…their frustration…their road rage and vindictiveness, that I …yes I could not possible ever be such a way..ohhh sooo wonderful me. Oh no..in the quiet after I have sentence them to death for their ridiculous behaviors, my mind plays the motion picture of my life of this exact same things. How low I feel in just that moment that now I must sentence myself!

Evil. Am I evil, because I recognize evil in others? Perhaps it’s more of a loss of innocence. It certainly doesn’t mean that I’ve fallen with them. When others are evil to you, you begin to suspect, to recognize it in others. Pain, hurt, poor intentions, evil intentions, all cause you to look at things a different way.

I think the opposite can occur, when this happens to you. It’s a choice. Instead of becoming evil yourself, you can choose to go the opposite way. If someone is unkind, increase your kindness. If someone is dishonest, find the greater truth within you. If someone is cruel, let your heart overfill with love.

People do tend to judge others from their own perspective on life. If you are always seeking to “get over” on others, to find a shortcut, to take advantage, then you will definitely expect others to be doing the same. You see evil motives where perhaps none exist. So, I guess the ultimate answer is either yes, you, too, are evil, or you have been touched by someone evil in the past.
